St John's is now utilising AlwaysOnVPN technology, this means that you will be able to access school shared drives and resources, if you are a selected staff member and have got a dedicated work laptop. 


If you have already received your laptop and logged in to it on campus, you should see the VPN option in your control center when you click your Wi-Fi icon, as below:




If so, continue with "First Time Use"


Please note that it may not work in other schools or private establishments due to local security & filtering in place.


First time use:

  • It's important to check whether you have got one or many authentication certificates before you start using VPN, hence when you will use it for the first time, please do the following:
    1. Click on VPN from the wifi list to see the following window:
    2. Click Connect
      • If you will get connected straight away without further input, feel free to disconnect from the VPN and tick "Connect automatically". This way VPN will connect every time you are not using school network.
      • If you will get a message "Action required" and prompt to choose the identity/certificate, please select the one with your full name or email.
      • It should then remember your choice or you will be asked to choose the right one each time you will decide to connect to VPN.
        • Hence, please DO NOT tick "Connect automatically" as it may cause the VPN to not work properly.

Troubleshooting:

  • If you cannot see "STJ AlwaysOnVPN", please bring your laptop on campus
    1. Connect to the WiFi or ethernet cable
    2. Login and wait for 10-15 minutes
    3. Then restart your work laptop
    4. After the restart, please login again and click on the wifi/ethernet icon at the bottom right.
    5. You should see "STJ AlwaysOnVPN" at the top of the list
  • If VPN says connected, but you still see the red cross on shared drives
    1. Please click on them and they should reconnect
  • If VPN says connected, but you are getting a yellow triangle error upon clicking on the shared drive
    1. Please refresh the "This PC" folder by clicking refresh at the top right: 
    2. Then try opening any of the drives
    3. If still not working, please re-connect to VPN
    4. Click on the wifi list
    5. Click on "STJ AlwaysOnVPN" and select "disconnect"
    6. then click on connect again, wait until its connected.
    7. Confirm by hovering your mouse coursor over your wifi icon and you should see "Stjohns domain" and your wifi name above, otherwise please wait until it will.
      1. Please note that it may say "No internet access" but that is acceptable.
  • If VPN says "connecting" indefinitely
    1. Please restart your staff laptop and try connecting again
    2. If it still says "connecting" indefinitely, please follow the steps below:
      1. Type "VPN" in the search field at the bottom left of your screen and click on "VPN settings"
      2. In the new windows select "STJ AlwaysOnVPN" and then untick "Connect Automatically"
      3. Click on "disconnect" if available, then click on "remove"
      4. Once "STJ AlwaysOnVPN" profile has disappeared, please download this VPN profile: click here to download STJ AlwaysOnVPN profile
      5. Once downloaded please double click on it and click connect
      6. Confirm by hovering your mouse coursor over your wifi icon and you should see "stjohns domain" and your wifi name above, otherwise please wait until it will.
        1. Please note that it may say "No internet access" but that is acceptable.
